A
"family caregiver" is anyone who provides
ongoing assistance to a family member, friend, or neighbour
with a chronic illness or disability, or a senior who
needs support.
Approximately
1 in 10 Canadians is a family caregiver. Chances are
that if you are not a family caregiver, you know someone
who is. Family caregivers serve a very important role
in our society, but remain invisible despite their invaluable
contributions.
Family
caregivers provide almost $10 billion dollars worth
of unpaid care, often balancing that role with paid
employment, other family and community responsibilities,
and their own health needs. While caregiving can be
deeply rewarding, it can also be stressful physically,
mentally, emotionally, and financially.
The
number of conditions that could make any of us a family
caregiver is long and depressing. They typically claim
two victims: the one who gets the disease and the one
who spends years caring for them. Our focus is on the
Family Caregiver.
We
are the Alberta Caregivers Association. We are a charity
that works to help family caregivers preserve themselves
through education, support, and advocacy programs. We
also seek recognition of the crucial role of family
caregivers by the professional healthcare team members
caring for their loved one.
We
work with other organizations that provide support for
the person with the disease. Some are listed in the
table on the right side. Our responsibility is to help
the family caregiver throughout their journey.
The
ACGA, founded in 2001, is governed by a Board of Directors,
the majority of whom are caregivers. Membership is open
to all family caregivers in Alberta.
Thank
you for taking the time to visit us.
